Forecast of vitiligo
The evolution of vitiligo is very variable. In 3 out of 10 people affected by vitiligo there is no satisfactory response to the treatments previously exposed. Faced with cases that remain stable for years, there are others with a faster progression. But in most cases its course is slowly progressive for several years, until it finally stabilizes.
Some factors that may influence the progression and prognosis of vitiligo have been determined :
- The age of appearance of the lesions: it seems that patients with earlier onset tend to have greater stability of the lesions and therefore not to progress.
- Extension: it is considered that the universal vitiligo (very extensive affectation) tends to progress more frequently given its relationship with an autoimmune origin.
- Family history: when there are several cases in the same family, the possibility of progression of the lesions is greater.
- Mucous membrane involvement It usually accompanies more extensive lesions, as in the universal form, and in these cases there is greater progression.
In cases of semen or localized involvement and later onset of lesions (20% of cases) the skin can return to its original color without any treatment. This is known as spontaneous repigmentation , but in very few of these cases it is a complete cure, normally the skin is mottled with white and dark spots.
